Textbook: Ecce Romani III, Prentice Hall Publisher, replacement cost $65.00.
Each topic addressed in the Program of Studies has progress indicators defining what students will be able to do. Essential vocabulary and language structures are presented to students within the context of the themes and topics.
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has developed and uses the Performance Assessment for Language Students (PALS) program. Performance assessments are conducted routinely throughout the year and are rated using PALS criteria (rubrics) developed by FCPS foreign language teachers. The end-of-year assessment again uses the PALS performance criteria.
For additional information, including resources for students, see the FCPS Foreign Language Home Page at: http://www.fcps.edu/DIS/OHSICS/forlang/.
The FCPS Grading
The final course grade is based as follows:
First Semester 40%; Second Semester 40%; Final PALS 10%; and Final Exam 10%. Quarter grades are calculated from quizzes, tests and most importantly the daily translations contained in a notebook. This is shown to the teacher at end of every translation-class for a grade.. Final grades are calculated on both average and quality points.
Permission to Take a Final Exam Early
Teachers must receive requests for missing a scheduled final exam at least one week prior to the exam. The request must be in the form of a letter from the parent, and must include the reason to warrant a deferral. If approved, the student will take their final exams at the teacher’s discretion. The content administrator should be notified in the event of an early exam. If teachers deem it necessary, then arrangements can be made with their students to take their exam with an administrator after school has dismissed for the summer.
Grading Design
Homework for practice or preparation for instruction will account for no more than 10% of a quarter grade. All final grades will be calculated in both numerical percentages and quality points. The four point scale will be used for grading in this course as follows:
•4 - means that you mastered the translation and grammar correctly with NO ERRORS (A)
•3 - means that you understand the translation, but make few grammatical errors (B)
•2 - means that you ALMOST translated the material and made grammatical errors (C)
•1 - means that you attempted the translation and showed some evidence of understanding the grammar (D)
•0.5 - means that you attempted the translation (F)
•0 - means that you left the translation BLANK (F)
SIS now has a ParentVue component. Parents can access their student’s attendance and grade progress at any time. For your convenience, I will be pre-loading all major assignments in SIS as available. This will allow you to see approximate due dates (always subject to change) for your child’s major assignments. With the exception of some major papers and projects, grades will be posted in SIS within 7 days of their due date.
Percentage of the Spread sheet
Each teacher will show the percentage of the Spread Sheet column on progress reports that are shared with students, parents and administrators. Students are to receive a grade for at least nine (9) assessments per quarter. One assignment should not count for more than 20 percent of a students’ final quarter grade. Team or Departments should decide on the maximum number of percentage points for any one assignment
Back to School Night -- September 6, 2018
Late and Missing Assignments; Extra Credit
Late or Missing assignments are the responsibility of the student to complete and inform the teacher that the work is missing. After one week, the assignment is subject to a 20% reduction in point value based on the maximum grade of the assignment. The last day to turn in any assignment is two weeks past its due date; unless other arrangements have been made in advance. Extra credit is not available, the priority is to learn the basic material.
Master Learning Process -- World Languages
The World Languages Department at Edison High School seeks to allow every student the chance to prove and maximize performance. Our goal is to foster an environment where a student has the chance to show mastery after an evaluation test, by staying committed to the learning process, and with that student commitment, allow the grade to be reassessed. Seeking to achieve this goal -- the Department adopts the following Process:
1. every student is able to show mastery of the material through re-testing until the end of the grading quarter; except, no re-testing will be allowed during the last two weeks of the course due to school-wide testing demands;
2. students seeking re-testing may meet, as arranged with the teacher, after school or during Eagle Time;
3. assignments for re-testing include, but are not limited to, quizzes, tests, and homework, Final and PALS tests are not included in this re-testing as the tests are County-wide with no substitutes available for that course;
4. a higher grade earned on a re-test will replace the earlier grade.
