Every society, every nation, needs its heroes to create a standard of performance that can be admired. We do this is sports, sciences, law. We seek in action the definition of excellence. After all, how do you define courage? Dedication? Loyalty? The easy answers we can say but in real life it is often much more complex.
On page 141 is a listing of several early heroes of Rome. Read through and attach to each name a reason for why that person would be considered a hero. Then when you have added all those reasons exemplified by these people, you will have the Roman definition of a hero. Meanwhile, here is a video on one of them.

In doing the exercise of adding together all the characteristics of a hero, you have actually just done what lawyers do when they learn law: they read cases explaining how a law was interpreted based on changing facts. A law then gets an idea of the trend in the development of a branch of law and can decide whether s/he can create new law through the facts of the case at hand. Check you knowledge of what you have just learned about Roman heroes.

Look at the picture on page 136. What time do you think it now is? How are the boys reacting to the dogs? If they are concerned about them, they are wise. Remember this is an era where the disease rabies can kill so they are smart to be cautious. Rabies still kills people today in the United States. An interesting protocol has been found that sometimes helps but usually it is not effective. It's call the Wisconsin Protocol. For those who are interested you can read the link to the article about it and the dangers. Then imagine what the World faced until today.
Translate the story on page 137 into your notebook, number every sentence for easy reference. So far so good.
